Which Printer Should You Move To?

If May 2027 is your trigger to move on, the table below maps each CP9-series model to the most suitable replacement from the DNP and HiTi ranges Photomart stocks in the UK. Every trade-in offer is individual, so treat the table as a starting point rather than a final answer.

Mitsubishi Printer Typical Use Recommended Upgrade Alternative
CP9550DW Event photography, photo booths. Prints 4×6, 5×7, 6×9 at around 16 sec per 4×6. DNP DS620: prints 4×6, 5×7, 6×8 at 8.3 sec per 4×6 (400/hr). Noticeably faster, same workflow, compact footprint. Covers all your sizes except 6×9. HiTi P529LX: prints 4×6, 5×7, 6×8 at around 12.8 sec per 4×6. Slightly slower than the DS620 but well matched to the CP9550DW in volume.
CP9600DW High-resolution event and wedding labs. 600dpi dual-line head, same sizes as CP9550DW. DNP RX1-HS: prints 4×6, 5×7, 6×8 at 12.4 sec per 4×6 (290/hr), 700-roll capacity, very compact at 14kg. Closest match in footprint and intended use. DNP DS620 if you want faster throughput (400/hr) and do not need the smaller footprint.
CP9810DW High-volume labs, school photography. 8 sec per 4×6, 400+ prints/hr, 700-roll capacity. Prints 4×6, 5×7, 6×9. DNP DS620: matches the CP9810DW on speed (8.3 sec per 4×6, 400/hr) with a similar high-capacity roll. Covers 4×6, 5×7, 6×8. If you regularly printed 6×9, note the DS620 tops out at 6×8. HiTi P720L: 7.9 sec per 4×6, 1000-print roll capacity. Slower to change media, very high uptime. Prints 4×6, 5×7, 6×8. Good for kiosk or retail where minimising roll changes matters.
CP9550DW-S Retail kiosk, compact system integration. 4×6, 5×7, 6×9 output. DNP DS620: widely integrated into kiosk enclosures, strong software partner support, 4×6, 5×7, 6×8 output. HiTi P529LX: slightly smaller footprint, useful where enclosure space is tight. Prints 4×6, 5×7, 6×8.
CP9600DW-S Mid-volume kiosk. High-resolution output, same sizes as CP9550DW-S. DNP RX1-HS: compact kiosk form factor, 700-roll capacity, 290 prints/hr. Good match for mid-volume attended kiosk use. DNP DS620 if higher throughput is the priority.
CP9810DW-S High-volume kiosk and automated retail. Fast 8 sec per 4×6, 700-roll capacity. HiTi P720L: 7.9 sec per 4×6 with a 1000-print roll, meaning fewer media changes and more uptime in an unattended kiosk. Prints 4×6, 5×7, 6×8. DNP DS620: slightly lower roll capacity (400 prints per 4×6 roll) but faster at 8.3 sec and has broader software support if your kiosk software requires it.
CP9820DW-S High-volume automated kiosk, same output range as CP9810DW-S. HiTi P720L: designed for high-volume unattended kiosk environments with a 1000-print roll and 7.9 sec per 4×6. Front-access design suits kiosk enclosures. DNP DS620 for broader software compatibility or if your enclosure suits a 400-roll format.
Portable / mobile On-location shoots, mobile event photography, compact setups needing 4×6 only. DNP QW410: 13lbs, the lightest dye-sub printer in its class. Prints 4×4, 4×6, 4.5×4.5, 4.5×8 at 19 sec per 4×6. Note: does not print 5×7 or 6×8. HiTi P529LX: heavier but prints 4×6, 5×7, and 6×8 if you need those sizes on location.
A quick note on DNP model names: You may come across DNP printers with an ‘A’ at the end of the model name, for example DS620A or DS820A. The ‘A’ simply stands for America and denotes the North American version. The printers Photomart stocks are the European models (RX1-HS, DS620, DS820, QW410) without the ‘A’, and those are the correct versions for use in the UK. If in doubt, just ask us and we will make sure you get the right one.

DNP dye-sublimation printers Primary upgrade

DNP RX1-HS · DS620 · DS820 · QW410

DNP (Dai Nippon Printing) has been in business for over 150 years. What many people don’t realise is that DNP manufactures the dye-sublimation media inside printers sold under other brands — including Citizen, Kodak, and Mitsubishi. When you move to a DNP printer, you’re buying direct from the people who made the consumables in your current machine.

HiTi dye-sublimation printers Alternative upgrade

HiTi P529LX · P720L

HiTi has been building dye-sublimation printers since 2001 and has won multiple DIMA Digital Photo Printer Shoot-Out awards. They specialise in compact, reliable hardware for event, kiosk, and ID photo workflows — nothing else. The P529LX is the current model replacing the P525L.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

When is Mitsubishi CP9 media being discontinued?

May 2027. Mitsubishi Electric has confirmed this officially on their Media Supply Policy page at mitsubishielectric-printing.com. That is the final date for all CP9-series codes: CK9046, CK9046PST, CK9057, CK9069, CK9015, CK9318, and CK9523. After that point, once existing stock worldwide runs out, there will be no more.

Can I still use my printer after May 2027?

Yes, the printer itself will still work fine mechanically. The problem is the media. Once Mitsubishi stops manufacturing it in May 2027 and whatever distributor stock exists globally has sold out, there will be nothing left to print with. Getting ahead of this now, whether by reserving stock or planning an upgrade, is the sensible move.

I have a grey-front CP9 printer. Which media does it use?

The grey-front standalone event printers (CP9550DW, CP9600DW, CP9810DW) use CK9046 (4×6″), CK9046PST (4×6″ postcard), CK9057 (5×7″), and CK9069 (6×9″). These are different to the red-front kiosk -S series media and they do not cross over. If you are not sure which you have, contact us with your model number and we will confirm.

I have a red-front CP9 kiosk printer. Which media does it use?

The red-front kiosk system printers (CP9550DW-S, CP9600DW-S, CP9810DW-S, CP9820DW-S) use CK9015 (4×6″), CK9318 (5×7″), and CK9523 (6×9″). These will not work in the grey-front event printer models.

What should I upgrade to if I have a CP9550DW?

The DNP DS620 is the strongest match. It prints 4×6, 5×7 and 6×8 at 8.3 seconds per 4×6 (around 400 prints per hour), which is a significant step up from the CP9550DW’s 16 seconds. The only difference is the DS620 tops out at 6×8 rather than 6×9, so if you regularly used that size, let us know and we can advise further. The HiTi P529LX is an alternative if you want a slightly lower-cost option, running at around 12.8 seconds per 4×6 with the same size range.

What should I upgrade to if I have a CP9810DW?

The DNP DS620 matches the CP9810DW closely in both speed (8.3 sec per 4×6 vs the CP9810DW’s 8 sec) and print range, covering 4×6, 5×7 and 6×8. If you relied heavily on the 6×9 size, the DS620 does not cover that. The HiTi P720L is worth considering for high-volume or kiosk use: its 1000-print roll means far fewer media changes, and it prints a 4×6 in 7.9 seconds.

What should I replace my CP9820DW-S kiosk printer with?

The HiTi P720L was designed for exactly this kind of unattended or semi-attended kiosk environment. It has a 1000-print roll capacity (cutting downtime), prints a 4×6 in 7.9 seconds, and has front-access loading suited to kiosk enclosures. The DNP DS620 is a valid alternative if your kiosk software has better compatibility with DNP or your enclosure suits a smaller roll. Speak to us about your specific setup and we can help you work through it.

Is the DNP QW410 a good portable replacement for my CP9 printer?

It depends on which sizes you print. The QW410 is exceptionally light at 13lbs and prints 4×6, 4×4 and 4.5×8 at 19 seconds per 4×6. However it does not print 5×7 or 6×8, which the CP9 series does. If you only need 4×6 on the move, it is an excellent choice. If you need 5×7 or 6×8 on location, the HiTi P529LX covers those sizes and is still a reasonably portable unit.

Does this affect me if I use my CP9 for photo booths or wedding photography?

Yes, if you are running a CP9550DW, CP9600DW, or CP9810DW, which covers the vast majority of photo booth and wedding event setups in the UK. The CK9046 and CK9057 media both end in May 2027. The sooner you plan, the more options you have, both for buying forward stock and for getting a good trade-in deal.

How much stock should I reserve?

That depends on how many prints you produce each month and how long you plan to keep using your current printer. There is no single right answer, but we can help you work it out. Give us your model number and a rough monthly print volume and we will give you an honest view of what is realistic to secure.
