Operational Features of the DS620

Hardware Rewind Function

The system features an internal media rewind mechanic, designed to eliminate paper and ribbon waste when producing mismatched print layouts. Operators can execute multiple print sizes, such as standard 4×6" prints alongside 6x6" square formats, from the same roll without manually pausing print jobs or executing mid-roll media swaps.

Production Speeds

Engineered for rapid turnarounds, the printer produces a standard 4×6" print in 8.4 seconds, 5×7" layouts in 14 seconds, and 6×8" enlargements in 15.6 seconds. This allows for a sustained throughput of up to 400 prints per hour, preventing customer queues during peak operating hours at scale.

Configurable Print Sizes

The driver supports 11 print dimensions ranging from standard 2×6" photo booth cuts to panoramic 6×20" layouts out of a single continuous 6-inch paper supply. This minimises operational complexity by decreasing the necessity of holding diverse media stock varieties in your inventory.

Driver-Controlled Finishes

Apply Glossy, Lustre, Fine Matte, or Matte finishes to any job directly through the print driver or DNP's Hot Folder Print application. Because the texture is modified via internal thermal head adjustments during print delivery, no mechanical paper replacements are necessary to switch finishes.

Space-Efficient Chassis Architecture

With a compact footprint designed to fit confined commercial spaces, the chassis measures 275×366×170mm and weighs 12kg. Built around a universal physical hardware architecture shared with platforms like the Citizen CX-02 printer, this standard external profile allows hassle-free integration into professional photo booth enclosures or transport flight cases built to fit either system specification.

Photomart 3-Year Service Coverage

While the standard factory warranty is only 2 years, buying through Photomart upgrades your coverage to a full 3-year commercial warranty (or up to 100,000 passes on the thermal head). This extended protection ensures long-term operational security handled directly by our London technicians.

Supported Print Dimensions & Real-World Application

By leveraging the system's driver capabilities, users can configure a wide array of formats from a unified 6-inch roll profile. This enables a flexible pricing structure and creative workflow offerings directly out of a single piece of hardware.

Bespoke Panoramic Output: Operators can easily construct individual custom panoramic sizes anywhere between 6×14" and 6×20" (15×35cm to 15×50cm) via the free DNP Hot Folder Print utility. The printer will seamlessly process and export to the maximum available programmatic length, letting users trim the paper manual to target non-standard sizing demands without buying standalone specialised equipment.

In-House Developed Speciality Media Configurations

Because DNP controls the chemical formulations and engineering of its own dye-sublimation consumable sets, they provide dedicated specialised paper substrates that expand on basic printing formats.

Perforated Paper Stocks

Pre-scored paper configurations enable multi-pane layouts to be manually torn apart cleanly without requiring cutting tools post-print.

  • 4"×4" and 2"×4" combined layout options
  • Dual 3"×8" strip distributions on single cuts
  • Triple 2"×8" ticket layouts on a single pass
  • Standard 4"×6" and 6"×8" perforated varieties

Self-Adhesive Sticker Stocks

Features a peel-away adhesive liner, converting standard images into permanent backing photo stickers for client activation booths.

  • Full edge-to-edge 6"×8" adhesive sheets
  • Segmented layouts for quick peeling and assembly

Premium Metallic Media

Incorporates an integrated pearlescent substrate layer, reflecting distinct light tones to offer highly saturated black values and bright colour depth.

  • Standardised 6"×8" metallic sheet packs
  • Reflective backing suited for high-end studio portraits
  • Durable overcoat protecting the reflective sheen

This structural control over media fabrication allows DNP printer users to access stable, reliable, and continuous paper developments. Photomart supplies these custom items directly from our warehouse stock for rapid deployment.

Four Print Textures via a Single Roll

The internal thermal mechanism processes custom temperature cycles directly onto the protective laminate ribbon layer, producing multiple unique textures without requiring physical media swaps.

Glossy

High-reflectivity flat surface coating that maximises deep primary colour output and clean lines.

Lustre

Soft-pebble textured semi-gloss layout that suppresses bright overhead glare while keeping sharp contrast intact.

Fine Matte

Deep non-glare layout featuring fine-grain textures favoured for professional gallery portrait prints.

Matte

Traditional flat finish presenting zero ambient reflection, heavily protecting against fingerprint marking.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I have an old DS40. Is this the right upgrade? +

Yes, the DS620 is the official successor to the legacy DS40 line. Factory production of original DS40 media has now finished across Europe. The DS620 uses the same footprint but adds a modern ribbon rewind feature to stop media waste, prints faster, and unlocks a massive range of new sizes including panoramic prints. Call us on 0208 527 6006 to get a trade-in value for your old units.

  • How does this compare to cheaper DNP models like the RX1HS? +

The DS620 is DNP's premium all-rounder. While budget options like the RX1HS hold more paper but are slower and chunkier, the DS620 is compact, prints a 4x6" in just 8.4 seconds, and lets you switch between 4 different print textures (Glossy, Matte, Lustre, and Fine Matte) completely on the fly from the exact same roll of paper.

  • Is the DNP DS620 the same machine as the Citizen CX-02? +

Visually and structurally, they look almost identical. Because they are built on a shared mechanical framework, external flight cases, photo booth brackets, and 5x7" paper spacers designed for the Citizen CX-02 will fit the DNP DS620 perfectly. However, they run on completely separate internal software and firmware. The DNP DS620 features custom ICC profiles and different circuit calibration to deliver faster sustained print speeds and tighter colour consistency out of the box.

  • Can I use Citizen CX-02 paper rolls inside the DNP DS620? +

No. Even though Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) is the massive global factory that actually manufactures the dye-sublimation media for Citizen, Mitsubishi, and other top brands, the media rolls are chipped and locked via firmware to their respective brands. Crucially, DNP keeps its most advanced, high-margin media developments—like pre-cut Perforated media, Self-Adhesive Sticker paper, and high-end Premium Metallic rolls—exclusively for owners of native DNP hardware like the DS620.

  • Does it waste ribbon if I print different sizes from the same roll? +

No. The printer smartly rolls back the ink ribbon if a print job leaves a gap. For instance, if you print a single 4x6" photo from a 6x8" ribbon set, the printer automatically winds the unused half of that ink panel back to use for the next print. This completely eliminates ribbon waste without you having to manually intervene.

  • Can I print panoramic photos? +

Yes. By using DNP's free Hot Folder Print software, the printer's brain tells the paper feed to keep rolling before it drops the internal cutting blade. This allows you to print stunning wide-angle group shots or landscapes up to 6x20" using your standard 6-inch media kits.

  • How do I change from glossy to matte? +

You do it entirely via the computer driver print settings. When you select a texture like Lustre or Fine Matte, the print head instantly adjusts its local heat signature while melting the clear laminate layer over the print. You never have to swap out rolls or open the printer door to change finishes.

  • Can I print stickers or metallic finishes? +

Yes. While the standard roll can change its texture digitally, specialized finishes like metallic gloss or adhesive stickers require loading their specific DNP media rolls. These rolls are built with a completely unique chemical backing right at the DNP production plant.

  • How many prints do I get out of one roll? +

Each box of standard 4x6" media yields 400 prints in total (supplied as two matching paper rolls and ink ribbons). For a busy event or an automated photo booth with heavy crowds, one loaded roll will typically keep you printing continuously for roughly two to three hours before needing a quick reload.

  • Does the printer come with a starter pack of paper? +

No, the printer box contains only the standalone hardware. Because different photographers want different initial formats (some want standard 4x6" media, others need 6x8" or sticker kits), media packs are sold separately. Each pack comes cleanly boxed with the correct ratio of paper rolls to matching ribbons.

  • What exactly does the 3-year warranty cover? +

The official DNP manufacturer warranty is 2 years, but Photomart exclusively extends this coverage to a full 3 years (or 100,000 prints, whichever comes first) for our customers. This covers the thermal print head itself. Best of all, you don't have to ship the printer back to the factory abroad; Photomart is an authorised UK repair facility, so our London-based engineers handle everything directly in-house.
